When you are responsible for one of the longest running parties in one of the worlds toughest towns you must be doing something right… right? For over 10 years and still going strong like Donkey Kong, ‘Turntables on the Hudson’ is the musical mirror that reflects the Big Apple’s melting pot of funk, soul, hip-hop and house thrown together with latin, afrobeat, salsa and just about anything in-between that gets the Hudson heaving.
10 years is a lifetime for anything in NYC, so to not only establish one of the city’s most enduring shindigs, but to transform it into a brand synonymous with tasty beats and treats that has resulted in six compilations, not to mention hosting the likes of Louie Vega, Mr Scruff, Mark Rae, Rainer Truby, Peter Kruder, Quantic and DJ Spinna as guests to your soiree, is the handiwork of one DJ Nickodemus.
Far from a one trick pony, ‘Turntables on the Hudson’ has merely provided the platform on which this Queens raised boy wonder has used to remind us all that good music has no boundaries, and genres are for those of us who focus on the destination and not the journey (deep I know).
Responsible for cult classics Cleopatra in New York and Mariposa, Nickodemus’s first album ‘Endangered Species’ also featured Mi Swing es Tropical which was used for the iTunes and iPod ads in the Summer of 2007. With remixes for Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Thievery Corporation amongst others, Nickodemus’s DJ commitments across the globe have helped him to bring a little bite of the apple to a global audience, as well as bringing back a little bit of world flavour with him.
Nickodemus’s long awaited follow up album ‘Sun People’ sees his usual home grown influences playing nice with dance music and collaborators from Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey and the UK…sounds like an Amazing Race itinerary! To support the release, Nickodemus is bringing the heat back to Australia as part of his ‘Sun People’ tour, ducking out quickly for some shows in Asia and NZ and then back Down Under for a last series of dates.
